The Virtual Private Network (VPN) service provides Academia Sinica staff with a secure remote access mechanism to connect to internal systems and services while off campus. Through the VPN service, users may access information resources restricted to on-campus use, supporting academic research and administrative operations.
In response to evolving information security requirements and identity authentication mechanisms, the new VPN service will be launched on March 18, 2026, integrating Single Sign-On (SSO) and FIDO authentication to enhance overall security and service quality
1. Eligibility and Authentication:
Eligible Users:
Current Academia Sinica staff members
Authentication Method:
Login with employee SSO account and FIDO authentication
2. Resourse Access Policy:
The VPN service is intended solely for accessing internal resources and services. External website traffic will no longer be routed through the VPN, in order to improve overall network performance and user experience.
- VPN access is limited to internal systems and services.
- When browsing external websites, your connection will use your original local network rather than the VPN.
3. How to Use:

Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ):
https://sites.google.com/as.edu.tw/vpn/faq
- New Users: Please follow the User Guide to activate and configure the VPN connection.
- Existing Users: Users who have previously activated VPN access must reconfigure or upgrade the VPN client software in accordance with the updated connection method described in the User Guide.
4. Important Notes:
- For travel to countries or regions with higher cybersecurity risks, a dedicated VPN service is available to enhance risk isolation and must be requested separately.
- If there is no usage record under “VPN service access privileges” within 90 days, the system will automatically deactivate the access. Users may apply for reactivation if needed.
- If no VPN connection activity is detected from the user device for more than 60 minutes, the VPN connection will be automatically terminated, and users must log in again.
- Successful VPN connection may be affected by factors including the user device status, operating system version, VPN software version, network environment, and endpoint security software settings.
The new VPN service will be available starting March 18, 2026. Staff members are advised to complete the configuration and migrate to the new service as soon as possible.
The legacy VPN service will be discontinued on April 1, 2026. During the transition period, if continued use of the legacy VPN is required, please refer to:
